Aftercare Following Brace Treatment
If you’re here then that probably means you’ve finished your orthodontic treatment. Congratulations! But your journey doesn’t stop here.
Aftercare is so important if you want to ensure your results last for years to come.
Oral Health
Our advice would be to schedule a dental exam and cleaning shortly after you have your braces removed. This is to check that no cavities have developed and to get rid of any tartar build-up that may have occurred while you had braces.
We also recommend you maintain a good cleaning routine, brushing and flossing will keep your pearly whites brighter for longer.
Eating
You might not think your diet matters after brace removal but it does. Your teeth are going to be sensitive for a little while so it’s best to avoid aggravating that sensitivity. Don’t eat anything very hot or cold for a few days to a few weeks after your braces are removed. Also, try to avoid heavily crunchy or chewy foods as your teeth will still be adjusting to their new positions.
Orthodontic treatment is a successful way to create that perfectly straight smile, but you run the risk of your teeth shifting back to where they started. This is why we are always adamant our patients wear their retainers as recommended by their consultant.
There are 2 types of retainer: fixed and removable. The fixed retainer is typically a thin wire worn across the back of the lower or upper front teeth, which is bonded in place.
Removable retainers are usually made from a clear plastic which can be taken out when eating and drinking.
If you lose or break your retainer then it’s vital you get in touch with us to order a replacement. The longer you leave it the more chance your teeth will have to move back into their original position.
