Dentist vs Orthodontist: What’s the difference?
Throughout your childhood, you should have been having regular check-ups with your dentist but as all your adult teeth come through, you may start seeing an orthodontist to have braces fitted.
So, what is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist? Continue reading to find out..
Dentist
When you visit your dentist, also known as a general dental practitioner, they will examine your teeth to see if they are coming through properly, whether your oral hygiene method is effective to avoid cavities and fix damaged teeth and gums. If you have a missing or damaged tooth your dentist can provide you with implants.
Dentists are there for you when you’re experiencing aches and pains and need an emergency appointment. If they find a cavity or decay on a tooth, they will aim to restore it and help to avoid further damage and pain. As well as this, they will guide you on how to care for your teeth and gums.
Orthodontist
Everyone wants straight teeth which is why your dentist will refer you to an orthodontist. An orthodontist specialises in correcting malocclusions and irregular bites/jaws. They examine your teeth and recommend suitable orthodontic appliances that will help to correct your bite/jaw. Orthodontists are qualified to remove teeth however often you will be referred back to your general dentist for this. The orthodontist or orthodontic practitioner will fit the appliances, supervise its progress and make regular adjustments over a series of appointments.
After having brace treatment with your orthodontist, they will then advise you to wear a retainer, in order to stop your teeth from moving back to how they were before your treatment.
